Plan afoot to develop waterways in Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, March 11

THE State Government is in the process of drawing up a comprehensive plan to renovate major waterways in the State. According to the Minister for Water Resources, Mr T.M. Jacob, the objective is to make the State's waterways more navigable.

A beginning has already been made with assistance from the Centre, he said. The renovation and development of the State's extensive network of waterways will not only make it cheaper to transport people and goods, but will also assist in further development of the State's tourism industry, he said.

Mr Jacob said the revitalisation of the State's waterways would not be limited to the major canals, but would also cover smaller canals that join the larger water bodies.

The Centre has agreed to meet 90 per cent of the expenditure on the development of Kerala's minor canals, he added.

The State has around 1,687 km of navigable waterways, with the West Coast Canal alone constituting 560 km of this network, he said. The Centre has taken over 205 km of the West Coast Canal as part of its National Waterways project.
