The Hindu Business Line : `Raw deal for district small-scale bodies'

THE Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) has strongly condemned the issue of an order by the Government of Tamil Nadu reconstituting the SSI board without any representation for the district SSI associations such as Maditssia and Codissia.

In the old constitution major district associations had representations and in fact it paved way the district SSI associations to express their grievances directly to the Ministers and High Officials.

In a communication the Association has said that it was really at a loss to understand why the Government had taken such a step to exclude district associations. They only know the real problems of SSI units and they should be given proper representation in the SSI board.

The Association has requested a reconsideration of the decision and include the major associations in the SSI Board.

Plastics bill: Meanwhile Maditssia has welcomed the move to drop the bill regarding the `ban on use of plastics', by the Government.

In a communication, the association has said that the decision will go a long way in protecting the interest of thousands of small and tiny units in the State and also in safe guarding the jobs of workers and traders.

The President of Maditssia, Mr K. Ramachandran, has said that the industries were not for any indiscriminate use of plastics but for using them wherever necessary and that too without affecting the environment.

The member units have been requested to strictly adhere to the norms of 20 microns thickness for any poly bag. While welcoming the Government's move to come out with a fresh bill for regulating the use of plastics, the association has requested the Government and the pollution control department to consult the industry associations before bringing such a bill.

They assured co-operation in arriving at a practical solution for the problem posed by plastics and in drafting a bill that can be implemented by the authorities.
