Need for Mumbai metro stressed

THERE is need to develop a high-capacity metro corridor in Mumbai to ease the pressure on its over-stretched rail and road transport network, according to Mr A. V. Ghangurde, Chief, Transport Division, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Quoting a Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) report, he said the metro corridor was estimated to cost Rs 14,000 crore. A committee had been set up to prepare a master plan for the project.
Consultants were being appointed to prepare a feasibility and detailed project report for the metro.
Mr Ghangurde was speaking at an Indo-French seminar on urban transport organised by UBIFrance, the French agency for international business development, and the French Embassy, in partnership with MMRDA and MSRDC (Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd).
Work on the Light Rail Transport System (LRTS) proposed along an 8.4-km stretch between Andheri and Ghatkopar suburbs of the city, was expected to commence by 2004, he added.
The seminar included presentations by French experts on a range of subjects including urban transport integration for a sustainable city, the development and financing of French urban transport, safety management and urban multimodal hubs.
