Diversion of Godavari waters

VISAKHAPATNAM: The municipal corporation at its special meeting late on Monday evening resolved unanimously to seek an allotment of 2.5 tmc feet of the five tmc feet of Godavari waters to be diverted to the city and the rest would be used for industrial purposes.
The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (APIIC) would be the nodal agency for implementing the Rs 300-crore scheme for diversion of Godavari waters to the city, to be entrusted to a private operator.
The Municipal Commissioner, Mr Navin Mittal, told the council that of the Rs 300 crore, the corporation would contribute Rs 50 crore Rs 40 crore as a loan at 10.5 per cent and the rest equity participation.
He said bids had been invited from private operators for the scheme, expected to become operational by the summer of 2004.
The Mayor, Ms Rajana Ramani, said a proposal would be sent to the State Government based on the resolution and the Government would also be requested to hand over the Meghadrigedda reservoir to the corporation for drinking water supply.
