Textiles Palladam to gain from powerloom thrust G. Gurumurthy
COIMBATORE, Feb. 2 WITH modernisation of textile weaving centres beginning to gain momentum, the Union Ministry of Textiles is seeking to give a push to its powerloom area development plan by laying emphasis on promoting powerloom complexes or marts in major weaving centres. With more than one lakh looms in operation, the Palladam powerloom cluster in the Tirupur-Palladam-Avinashi belt is likely to get a focused approach from the Ministry, which may sponsor a powerloom complex there. The large-scale imports of used weaving machines recently into the Palladam area has set off a higher pace of activity in the entire belt. Mr S. Chakraborty, Director (Powerloom) in the office of the Textile Commissioner, Mumbai, said: "Going by the emphasis on the quality fabric sourcing by the garmenting units, the pace of modernisation of the powerloom industry will be fast in over two years and this will be felt faster in the Palladam powerloom cluster." The proposed powerloom parks would be developed in major weaving centres and each park would envisage powerloom units having at least 100 weaving machines. The units would be adequately linked with back processes such as warping and sizing facility. The Centre would help create the infrastructure/common facilities for each park, which would include laying of roads, testing facility, exhibition and marketing halls, common effluent treatment plant, water supply, drainage, telecom facility, design centres and warehousing, besides inland container depots. The financial support from the Centre for these common facilities would be by way of reimbursement of the cost up to 75 per cent. However, in the case of certain critical elements such as CETP, design centre and water supply, 100 per cent reimbursement of the cost involved would be made.
