HYDERABAD, Feb. 1 NATCO Pharma Ltd (NPL), a Hyderabad-based Rs 95-crore pharmaceutical company known for its research strengths and time-release technology, has announced the launch of anti-cancer drug under the brand `Veenat' in 100 mg capsules form. The drug, called the `magic bullet' in the medical therapeutic segment, is claimed to be several times superior to the conventional therapy and approved by the USFDA authorities for use as first line of treatment for chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) on December 20, 2002. With this, NPL has earned the distinction of becoming the first pharmaceutical entity in the world to manufacture both the bulk active pharmaceutical ingredient and finished dosage formulation of imatinib mesylate in its generic form, the company said. In a release issued here recently, Natco said the drug was developed with in-house process technology. The drug spares the normal cells on usage unlike the conventional therapies. Further, according to the company, the drug is also tailor-made to select the genetic target. According to Natco, though imported finished dosage formulations of the drug were presently available in the country, they were prohibitively expensive. Natco's brand, which is claimed to be as good as the imported one, costs about one-eighth of the cost of imported medicine.
