Education IIT-KGP to have wider interface with industry Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Jan. 31 THE number of students pursuing under-graduate and post-graduate courses at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) is set to go up to 5,000 by 2005 from 3,500 at present. Towards this end, infrastructure at the campus in Kharagpur is being upgraded and expanded, according to Mr Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT-KGP. Stating this at a news conference here, Mr Goenka said the institute was exploring ways of increasing interface with industry and facilitating transfer of technologies. In this regard, he hoped that the recently launched Pan-IIT initiative in the US would speed up the process. Besides helping in generating funds, the Pan-IIT initiative could facilitate recruitments from India as well. Speaking on the occasion, Prof S.K. Dube, Director of IIT-KGP, said the institute had signed several MoUs with foreign institutes. The idea now is to carry these further for "joint, collaborative and tight-knit programmes.'' Prof Dube said that various research & development projects have been taken up in IIT-KGP. A VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design laboratory has been set up. Other important projects include a participatory forest management programme. IIT-KGP was laying special emphasis in areas such as molecular biotechnology, photonics, nano-science and biomedical technology, among others. To facilitate R&D in these areas, the institute was looking forward to funding from the government and alumni, among others. The 48th convocation of the institute, which is the oldest in the IIT system, is slated to be held on Monday. The Union Human Resources Development Minister, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, will be the chief guest at the function.
