Natural Calamities Govt to demand Rs 2,027 cr as drought relief Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Jan. 31 THE Tamil Nadu Government will request the Centre to pay Rs 2027.53 crore as compensation for drought damage. Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address, the Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa on Friday said the Government would place the demand for compensation before the four-member Central team. The Rs 2027 crore demand includes Rs 419 crore to pay the farmers Rs 5000 per acre for loss of samba crop, Rs 144.55 crore to pay Rs 1000 per acre for land that could not be cultivated, Rs 648 crore for waiver of crop loan principle and interest, Rs 162 crore for food-for-work programme and Rs 345 crore for loss to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. In addition, the State has demanded an allocation of nine-lakh tonnes rice for distribution. Ms Jayalalithaa announced that the State Government has decided to distribute 30 kg rice per month per farmer instead of the free meal scheme.
