Exports & Imports Lanka enters pact to recognise EIC certification Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Jan. 27 SRI Lanka would now recognise the certification of Export Inspection Council of India (EIC) for allowing imports into their country. An agreement recognising EIC's certification of exports from India has been signed between EIC and the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). Consequent to this agreement, the Lankan authorities would now inspect only 25 per cent of their import consignments from India as against the existing 100 per cent norm being practiced by them. The agreement would take effect after the Lankan authorities visit India in March to assess the efficacy of the systems that have been put in place by EIC for the certification of exports to Sri Lanka, Ms Shashi Sareen, Director, EIC, said here on Tuesday. Lanka currently maintains compulsory inspection of import consignments by their authorities on more than 80 products. According to Mr L.V. Saptharishi, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, said that such initiatives would remove some of the existing irritants and bottlenecks that came in the way of enhancing bilateral trade between India and Sri Lanka. A senior official from the Department of Commerce said that efforts were also on to recognise the certification provided by SLSI on export consignments coming into India. The Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in India, Mr Mangala Moonesinghe, said that his country was keen in removing all barriers that came in the way of flow of trade between the two countries.
