BRISTLECONE, a US-based company which provides supply chain management solutions, has announced the launch of its Indian operations. The company is making an investment of Rs 3 crore in the Indian centre, which will have 25 engineers to start with.

The Indian centre has a two-fold aim — to provide support to its US customers and develop tools and applications for the parent. It will help "extend the reach to India and APAC," said Mr Vinod Kumar, Managing Director, India.

Bristlecone (named after the oldest living tree in Death Valley, California) represents the capacity of a company to survive the most adverse conditions. It is one of the three development partners for SAP in the world. "We build solutions that bridge the gap between packaged software and business needs," said Mr Shekhar Chandrasekharan, VP Solutions. Bristlecone provides planning tools, which includes "event management". In other words, in case the supply or demand schedule goes wrong (for instance non-delivery of material), the Bristlecone solution makes midway changes and automatically adjusts the rest of the plan.

The company is looking at the APAC market, though India is expected to mature only after a year or so. It is targeting customers who have already installed supply chain management solutions and India still has to catch up on this.

As a percentage of potential revenues, India would account for "single digit" numbers while the rest of APAC is double digit, the company said. Bristlecone was set up in 1998, by Mr Padman Ramankutty, Mr Dung Tran and Mr Sham Afzalpurkar. The venture-funded company saw sales of $15 million last year. "We see at least a 30 per cent growth for the company," said Mr Afzalpurkar, basing estimates on the orders in the pipeline.
