Knitwear exports from Tirupur decline 8 pc

G. Gurumurthy

COIMBATORE, Jan. 8

KNITWEAR exports from Tirupur in 2002 have recorded an 8 per cent drop in value (dollar) terms and a little over 7 per cent decline in volume terms compared to the previous calendar year.

The total knitted garment shipment from Tirupur region last year fell to 3,580 lakh pieces as against 3,863 lakh pieces exported for the same period in 2001, with the sharp decline in the shipment seen in May (minus 30 per cent), June (29 per cent drop) and December 2002 (minus 23 per cent).

The total value realised for the exports went down to $6,915 lakhs compared $7,539 lakhs realised during the 12-month period of 2001, according to the figures furnished by the Apparel Export Promotion Council. (The export figures, however, do not reflect the readymade garments exported to the non-quota countries and non-quota items shipped to the quota countries barring those for the two months, i.e., May and June 2001, when these items were included in the AEPC endorsement).

The average monthly shipment from Tirupur during the just concluded calendar year slipped to 298 lakh pieces from 322 lakh pieces in the previous year. The rupee realisation of the Tirupur exports too came down to Rs 3,250 crore from Rs 3,468 crore, some 6 per cent decline.

The drop in the export is attributed by the knitwear industry sources partly to the difficulties in getting the export quota and the high premium rates prevailing for quotes especially for the 338 category of items this year.
