Rubber Rubber-based project proposals for GIM Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Jan. 8 THE Global Investors' Meet (GIM) has received a string of proposals relating to rubber-based industries with an investment potential of Rs 595 crore, apart from an RPG group proposal to set up a chain of `hyper markets' in the State, according to the Minister for Non-Resident Keralite Affairs, Mr M.M. Hassan. Speaking to newspersons on the run-up to the GIM, which kicks off in Kochi on January 18, Mr Hassan said that other proposals pertain to setting up food processing parks, herbal parks and abattoirs. A leading businessman from the UAE has expressed interest in setting up three abattoirs in the State. Another leading business group from Abu Dhabi is interested in setting up a herbal park-cum-hospital in Palakkad. The dozen-odd mega projects proposed in the food and co-operatives sector are estimated to involve an investment of Rs 1,200 crore, Mr Hassan said. He added that the State Government would present a project for setting up a series of large-scale banana chips manufacturing units, apart from those pertaining to an integrated coconut complex, spices and oleoresin extraction factory, an integrated spices processing unit, cold storage facilities for fruits and vegetables and vegetable oil refining and packing facilities. In banana chips manufacturing, the proposal was for setting up modern units with the latest technology to ensure longer shelf life for the product in both the domestic and international markets. Each unit, expected to entail an investment of Rs 1 crore, could be planned with a capacity of 1,500 kg on a daily basis. A private company called Trove Ltd has expressed interest in the project, Mr Hassan said. To a separate question, he said that a sub-committee of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) had submitted a report on the controversy surrounding the Cochin Industrial Water Supply Scheme, which will be discussed by a high-level meeting of the UDF on January 13.
