Value-added services to pull BSNL growth

KOLKATA, Dec. 30

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd's (BSNL) growth in the days ahead will be propelled by its portfolio of value-added service offerings.

Stating this during an interface with newspersons here, the Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, Mr Prithipal Singh, said the revenue from telephone services was more or less stagnant and, hence, revenue growth in the days ahead could be expected only from value-added services.

Mr Singh on Monday announced BSNL's foray into broadband services. A pilot project has been successfully undertaken here in Kolkata, he added. Commercial launch of the project — involving 48 customers to begin with — is slated for January 26, 2003. Under the project, a number of broadband services such as high speed Internet, video on demand, satellite TV channels and video conferencing would be offered to customers on their existing telephone lines.

Following the commercial launch in Kolkata, broadband services would be extended to Bangalore and Pune by end-March 2003. Subsequently, by mid-August 2003, the service would be extended to Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. BSNL proposes to introduce the broadband service commercially in at least one city in each telecom circle by August 15.

Mr Singh said the tariff structure for broadband services would be ``affordable and ready within the next one month''. He did not rule out the possibility of merging the DIAS (Direct Internet Access Service) with the basket of broadband services that would be made available.

Without elaborating on the matter, Mr Singh hinted at a possible rebalancing of fixed line and cellular tariffs in 2003.
