HYDERABAD, Dec. 29 THE fifth international plastics exhibition and conference, Plastindia - 2003, scheduled to be held for six days from February 15 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi, has been formally launched here under the auspices of the Andhra Pradesh Plastic Manufacturers Association (APPMA) and Plastindia Foundation. Mr T.S. Appa Rao, Commissioner of Industries, who was the chief guest, said that in terms of growth, plastics stood third after IT and pharma sectors, offering enormous scope for investments. Mr Vijay Merchant, Chairman of Promotion Committee of Plastindia - 2003, said it would be the biggest trade fair of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, with about 1,500 exhibitors from 35 countries, besides those of India, taking part in it. The international buyer-seller meet was aimed at enabling entrepreneurs to have a close look at product sourcing, technology acquisition/upgradation, joint ventures and licensing arrangements for new markets. The SAARC region offered possibilities for export of products from the country, he added. Mr S.V. Kabra, Chairman of National Executive Council, said Plastindia was alive to environmental aspects and would ensure that they were protected. China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, countries in West Asia and Europe, Canada and the US were among those participating in the event. Mr V.J. Vaghasia, Chairman of SSI Promotion Committee, said that in the WTO context, it was necessary for those in the plastics industry to go in for joint production and marketing for their own benefit. By 2005, the SSI sector would need investments worth $4 billions as the demand for plastics in the country was expected to go up to 7 million tonnes. Mr A. Ravindrababu, President of APPMA, said the industry was growing at 15 per cent a year and the demand for products in the State was 75,000 tonnes. Experts in plastics will share their experience with delegates. Plastindia awards would be given to Indian companies for developing innovative products. About one million people are expected to visit the exhibition.
