Coastal Paper hit by strike

RAJAHMUNDRY, Dec. 26

THE workers of Coastal Paper Mill at Kadiyam near here are on strike to press the management to concede their demands, including payment of bonus at 20 per cent.

The workers went on strike on Tuesday night, bringing to a halt the three turbines and boilers in the mill.

According to a joint statement issued by the five trade unions, the workers had served a notice on the management on December 5 with five major demands including the payment of bonus, but the management was willing to negotiate only on the issue of bonus and was silent on the other four demands.

The unions wanted a senior supervisor, who had been "illegally transferred to Hyderabad", brought back to the mill here, but the management was simply ignoring the issue.

The unions said they were left with no choice but to stop work in view of the "adamant stance" of the management. Mr Y.V. Chowdary, General Manager, said the workers had resorted to a flash strike, while the conciliation talks were in progress.

One round of conciliation talks had been conducted on December 23 in the presence of the assistant labour commissioner and an agreement had been arrived at on the issue of bonus.

The ACL had called another meeting on January 17 to deal with the other issues and the workers had in the meanwhile gone on strike, he alleged.

He said the mill would suffer production loss of 190 tonnes per day, worth Rs 40 lakh.
