Environment Plastic makers' move to rid Tirumala of waste Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Dec. 25 THE Andhra Pradesh Plastic Manufacturers Association (APPMA) has come forward to extend a helping hand to the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD), to rid the temple town of plastic wastes. Though the TTD imposed a ban on the usage of plastic bags sometime ago, it could not fully implement the order. The APPMA has stepped in and offered to adopt Tirumala town for the collection and disposal of plastic wastes, according to an association bulletin. As a first step taken recently, about 300 bins 150 in `green' colour and an equal number in `blue' were handed over to the Devasthanam officials. While the green bins would be used to collect dry waste, the blue ones are meant for wet and other forms of waste. The bins were manufactured by the Hyderabad-based VV Industries and the operations of collection and segregation of the various wastes was being handled by Sukuki Exnora, an NGO, APPMA said. TTD and the NGO have initiated steps to educate the sweepers to utilise the bins properly and deposit the waste in the right bins. The Indian Centre for Plastic & Environment (ICPE) and Reliance Industries Ltd have also actively supported the move. The Centre had banned the use of plastic carry bags during the Amarnath Yatra and along the route to Vaishnavo Devi temple in addition to several resort and tourist spots, while Himachal Pradesh has totally banned the use in hill stations. In this background, ICPE has been trying to interact with local civic authorities, NGOs and plastic manufacturers to put in place an effective waste management system, and arrest the menace of littering of plastic wastes, which are often non bio-degradable in nature. Consequently, the associations of plastic manufacturers across the country are trying to adopt pilgrim centres and hill stations to do their bit in cleaning up the mess.
