APTransco says farm power supply will fall

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, Dec. 24

THE Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (APTransco) has stated that it may not be possible to maintain the current power supply position for agriculture during this year's rabi season and appealed to the farmers in the State to take up paddy cultivation and also ensure that all crops were harvested by March 2003.

According to APTransco, there will be virtually no hydel power generation during the rabi season due to the unprecedented failure of southwest monsoons.

The water levels in the Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam reservoirs are very low and it is expected that only 2,930 MUs of hydel power will be generated during 2002-03 as against an expected 7,000 MUs.

APTransco, in a press release here on Tuesday, stated that it might be running short of power supply to the tune of 10 MU to 20 MU per day in the month of February and March 2003. Additional power supply would also not be available from the neighbouring States in view of the prevailing shortages.

Besides, the 2x250-MW Simhadri power project of the National Thermal Power Corporation has not yet stabilised fully and in case of any of the units going for outages, it would be difficult to supplement generation. Hence, APTransco would be using the entire 175 MUs hydel power sources during rabi for meeting the loss of generation due to unforeseen outages of the State and Central Sector thermal power units.

Under these circumstances, APTransco, along with the officials of the State Agriculture Department, had launched a special campaign to educate farmers.
