Letters Petrol politics
This is with reference to the editorial "SC deals a blow" (Business Line, December 23). The editorial has rightly pointed out that the court judgment cannot put an end to the unscrupulous way the dealership of petrol stations are distributed in the country. Also, the PMO should have realised that if it unnecessarily cancels all the allotments, the Supreme Court will intervene. In fact, the enormity of the Prime Minister's action can be gauged from the fact that, in the eyes of the court, as many as 3,343 dealerships were needlessly penalised when just 417 dealerships had to be put under the scanner. So it is apparent that the Prime Minister was trying to divert attention from the real issue. Moreover, the Prime Minister's order had given a rude jolt to the reforms process as it put a question mark over the sanctity of agreements. Clearly, this perception is not needed now if the oil sector reforms are to deliver the goods in the shape of more efficient production and distribution systems. C. P. Velayudhan Nair Kochi
