Plea to develop Madurai airport

Our Correspondent

MADURAI, Dec.19

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed for early completion of Madurai Airport expansion and modernisation.

A delegation of the Chamber led by its President, Mr S.Rethinavelu, which met the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, at New Delhi recently and submitted a memorandum, had also sought its conversion as an international airport and introduction of direct flights from Madurai to Sharjah, Sri Lanka and Maldives.

The memorandum has pointed out that the Tamil Nadu Government had taken steps for land acquisition and the Madurai District Administration has already handed over a part of the land required for expansion of the runway from the present 6,000 to 7,500 feet to the Airport Authority and the remaining part is to be handed over soon.

Hence the expansion work should begin as soon as land acquisition is completed, it said.

The delegation also has insisted for an early introduction of direct flights from Madurai to Delhi and Madurai to Bangalore.

In a statement here, Mr Rethinavelu has said that the Minister has agreed to consider the delegation's request for introduction of flight from Madurai to Sri Lanka, Maldives and Sharjah.
