SSI Info-Tech - E-Commerce & E-Business An e-bridge to the global market Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Dec. 19 THE industry should make a concerted push to utilise information technology tools to market its products globally, according to Mr Denis Belisle, Executive Director, International Trade Centre, Geneva. With small and medium enterprises responsible for nearly 60 per cent of India's export, software development should be more focussed on the needs of the entrepreneurs. The information technology industry, which was focussed on exports, should also cater to domestic needs, he said. The Internet enables small enterprises to access the global market. The International Trade Centre has put together a programme, e-trade bridge, to empower the small and medium enterprises to utilise information technology tools to exploit the potential in international markets. Mr Belisle was addressing the kick-off meeting of e-trade bridge here on Thursday. The two-day meeting aims to assist small-scale industry to better understand the information technology tools, apply them in day-to-day business, and improve competitiveness and trade prospects. Mr D. Jayakumar, the Tamil Nadu Minister for Information Technology, said the State Government was committed to the development and application of information technology in governance. Core groups have been constituted to address issues like policy, legal and regulatory aspects, finance, technology and human resource development. A committee led by the Chief Secretary was looking at steps to make the Secretariat a paperless office. The Government spends more than Rs 15 crore on stationery items at the Secretariat alone. With a one-time expenditure on hardware, the Government would make a major saving and speed up the processes, he said. Mr R. Badrinath, Director, Division of Trade Support Services, International Trade Centre, said that information technology tools will help to fully exploit the potential in small scale sector in value added manufacturing and technology-based products. However, the technology is not a substitute for good business management, he said. Mr S. Lakshminarayanan, Additional Secretary, Information Technology Department, Government of India, urged the International Trade Centre to develop similar programmes for the benefit of the farmers. The Government of India would participate in the project to enable farmers get market information. The e-trade bridge programme involves preparation of a national and sectoral E-Map and E-balance sheet enumerating action points and preparedness of the enterprises, providing products, tools and services to identify and exploit market opportunities, installing and operationalising off-line dissemination mechanisms and helping companies improve business processes with E-commerce applications and in-company E-trade learning. The programme is being organised by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu and the India Trade Promotion Organisation in collaboration with the International Trade Centre.
