The Hindu Business Line : Vittal panel to ensure good governance

MR N. Vittal, former Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) and head of a high-power commission to advise the State Government on ways to speed up administrative reforms and bring in transparency in governance, told media persons here on Thursday that the focus of the commission would be on ensuring timely and qualitative provision of services to people and checking corruption in service delivery.

Called the Advisory Commission on People's Empowerment (COPE), it has among others Mr Vijay Mahajan, Dean of Indian School of Business, Dr G.K. Jayaram, Director of Infosys Leadership Development Institute and Dr Pramath Sinha, Principal of McKinsey & Company, as members.

It would also look into the productivity of government departments and the issue of reducing cost of providing services. Mr Vittal said every month the commission would visit two districts, meet officials of at least two departments and interact with NGOs, MLAs and members of the public to elicit their views on good governance.

It would submit monthly reports to the Government on its findings and see that the principle of concurrent implementation of recommendations was followed by the latter.
