Courts/Legal Issues Bengal to move HC on CESC tariff issue Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Dec. 17 THE dismantling of cross-subsidies in the CESC tariff has been taken up by political parties with the Opposition parties on Tuesday setting a copy of the order on fire within the well of the House and the State Power Minister making a statement that the Government will go to the High Court soon. The West Bengal Power Minister, Mr Mrinal Banerjee, later told newspersons at the Assembly that besides approaching the High Court, the State was taking legal opinion on its other "alternatives". "We will seek an amendment to the Electricity Regulatory Commission Act of 1998, since we feel that this trend of dismantling cross-subsidisation will be extended to other utilities like the West Bengal State Electricity Board also ultimately affecting half a crore of the State's population." He said that the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, would also write to the Prime Minister seeking his intervention since the move had ramifications for the entire country.
