ICWAI may accept Pakistani's idea on name change

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, Dec. 17

AT a time when India-Pakistan relations are less than cordial, it is somewhat surprising that the proposal to change the name of Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) has come from across the border.

A Pakistani accountant has suggested that Indian cost accountants should call themselves `chartered management accountants' - a recommendation that seems to have found acceptance locally.

A section of ICWAI members are ready to subscribe to Ms Mumtaz Hassan's theory that the name-change will help uplift the image of management accountants in the region. Accordingly, the institute should be renamed as Institute of Chartered Management Accountants of India (ICMAI).

In fact, Ms Hassan is not in favour of retaining the `cost accountants' tag at all. Members of ICWAI should not call themselves `cost and management accountants' in future, it is felt.

ICWAI sources maintain that the suggestion is pertinent in the current situation. They, however, point out that the name-change issue is not of recent origin; it has been in the air for quite some time, having been raised at various fora on a number of occasions.

According to a message currently being circulated to constituents of an ICWAI e-group, this time members are learnt to have urged for a time-bound programme on the matter, to be initiated by the institute authorities. They feel that some action should materialise by the 2003 budget session of the Parliament.
