Our Bureau

MUMBAI, Dec. 16

THE first advance trade estimate of rabi (summer) oilseeds for 2002-03 places the crop size at 75.1 lakh tonnes, down from 79.4 lt in the rabi season the previous year.

According to the New Delhi-based Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade, the 2003 rabi crop forecast comprises groundnut in-shell 18 lakh tonnes (17.7 lt); rapeseed/mustard 39.5 lt (47.0 lt); sunflowerseed 10.1 lt (7.2 lt); sesame 2.2 lt (2.2 lt); safflowerseed 2.9 lt (2.9 lt); and linseed 2.4 lt (2.4 lt). The second advance estimate will be released towards end of January 2003.

Together with 97.2 lt estimated for the kharif crop, aggregate output of nine cultivated oilseeds in 2002-03 will be around 172 lt, one of the lowest in recent years. The country's oilseeds production started to pick up from 1988-89 onwards. The last time annual oilseeds output fell below 175 lt was in 1989-90 when 169.2 lt were harvested.
