Awards & Honours Indal, HLL best energy savers Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Dec. 15 THE Indian Aluminium Company, Alupuram, Kalamassery, and Hindustan Lever, Kochi have won commendation certificates for energy conservation from the State-level Monitoring Committee for Energy Conservation for year 2002. The committee did not find any single entry from Category 1 (large-scale enterprises) suitable for being considered for the annual Kerala Energy Conservation Award. Instead, it chose to give away commendation certificates to these companies, a spokesman of the Energy Management Centre (EMC), an autonomous body under the Department of Power, said. Indal was selected on the basis of the percentage reduction in specific energy consumption consistently for the last three years through continual improvements in operating parameters with the aid of innovations in existing process control system. Harnessing of IT resources had helped the company to achieve its objectives. Indal also had managed to achieve the same through process improvements such as using processed oil and noodles and maximising usage of pitch (about 60 per cent) instead of fuel oil in boilers. In Category II (medium scale enterprises), Hindustan Latex was selected for the award based on efforts to reduce energy consumption by optimising electrical drying operation, installing energy savers in lighting circuit and improving fixtures and through better housekeeping. In Category III (small scale enterprises), the Kochi-based Solar Technologies and Services India won the award for promoting and installing different renewable energy systems such as solar lanterns (2600 nos. sold and serviced in 2001-02), solar domestic lighting system (300 nos.) and solar water heating system (843 nos.). In Category IV (non-profit organisations), the award went to the Kollam-based Energy Conservation Society in appreciation of its efforts at popularising conservation concepts among housewives, students and the public. A Commendation Certificate has been awarded to Biotech, the Centre for Development of Non Conventional Energy Resources, Thiruvananthapuram, and Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE), Thrissur, for sustained efforts in the area of energy conservation, the spokesman said. In Category V (Individuals), the award went to Mr K. Soman of Thrissur, while the Commendation Certificate went to Mr Babu Kammath of Kochi.
