Sisspa for thrust to cotton farming

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE: South India Small Spinners Association (Sisspa) has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to give impetus to the State's cotton cultivation so that the deficiency in raw material supply to the State's textile industry is removed.

The association has called upon the Chief Minister to gear up the State agriculture university and the agriculture department to go for high yielding, disease/drought-resistant and short duration cotton variety as the shortage of locally available cotton and the high priced cotton brought from outside the State have been the bane of the Tamil Nadu-based textile industry. The association has also asked the Tamil Nadu Government to do away with the 4 per cent sales tax on cotton procured within the State.
