Kanwar leads race for FICCI Vice-President

NEW DELHI, Dec. 11

THE countdown has begun yet again for selection of a Vice-President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). It's usually the tradition that a Vice-President will go on to become the President of the apex chamber over the next two years.

With Dr A.C. Muthiah, Chairman, SPIC, all set to don the mantle of the President of FICCI from December 14 and Mr Y.K. Modi, Chairman, YKM Holdings, the Senior Vice-President, the focus has now shifted to the contenders for the post of Vice-President.

Leading the race for this post, according to industry sources, is the Chairman and Managing Director of Apollo Tyres Ltd, Mr Onkar Singh Kanwar. If Mr Kanwar becomes the Vice-President, he may well go on to become the President of FICCI, a post held by Mr Kanwar's father, the late Raunaq Singh.

FICCI officials refrained from confirming the name of Mr Kanwar as the next Vice-President of the apex chamber. It was pointed out that they were not willing to get into controversies. "We will inform you at the right time," said a FICCI official.

In 2001, the chamber ran into problems over the appointment of its Senior Vice-President. Mr R.V. Kanoria, Vice-Chairman of Kanoria Chemicals, was asked to make room for Dr A.C. Muthiah for this post. Following this, Mr Kanoria had quit his post of Vice-President.
