CETMA hails passage of cable TV Bill

NEW DELHI, Dec. 11
THE Consumer Electronics and TV Manufacturers Association (CETMA) has welcomed the passage of the Cable Television Networks Amendment Bill to regulate and streamline the cable TV networks system in the country and implementation of the conditional access system (CAS).
"This will help plug the huge amount of pilferage in the revenue chain in the cable TV business and result in greatly increased revenues to all the parties in the value chain from the cable operator to the broadcaster. But above all, this will give the consumer the right to choose the channels he wants to watch and pay only for those," CETMA said.
The subscribers will need a `set-top box' to receive the encrypted signals being transmitted from the cable TV operator's end. The access will be controlled by a smart card, which is validated as per the requirement of the consumer.
CETMA has assured that the consumer electronics industry in India is geared to meet the requirement of these set-top boxes, whether analog or digital.
