NEW DELHI, Dec. 10

CLOSE on the heels of strengthening its manufacturing base in the country, Samsung India does not rule out the possibility of making India an export hub.

"We are already exporting the colour TVs to destinations in Europe and to some countries in Asia. In fact, we are expecting exports of two lakh units this year," Mr R. Zutshi, Vice-President (Sales), Samsung India, said.

He told Business Line that, "With the manufacturing facilities for refrigerators coming up we will also look at exports of the same out of India."

Commenting on the financing of the refrigerators facility here, Mr Zutshi said that the $25-million project has been funded by the parent company, internal accruals and loans. Further, on whether the company will continue to source its fridges from local manufacturers, Mr Zutshi said the contracts would go on. Mr Zutshi said that 50 per cent of its sales will come from fridges that are sourced from contract manufacturers. The proposed facility will start manufacturing only in August 2003.

Elaborating on the issue, Mr M.B. Lee, Vice-President (Marketing), said, "There is a possibility of making India into an export hub for smaller size refrigerators. The Korean parent has taken its India operations on priority basis."

Apart from the available categories the company is now focussing on the audio category also. Next year will see a whole new range of audio products from Samsung, Mr Zutshi said.
