Industry Associations Permanent exhibition venue for Madurai mooted Our Correspondent
MADURAI, Dec. 10 THE Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation, Mr S. Rajarethinam, has said that a permanent exhibition venue in the city could be part of the Central Government's scheme to promote cluster enterprises. He sought a report to that effect from the President of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries' Association (MADITSSIA), Mr K. Ramachandran, so that the State Government could forward it along with similar reports from Coimbatore and Chennai to the Central Government. As per the scheme, the Central Government's contribution would be 75 per cent and the industrialists should raise the rest with collective identity as a company. The scheme has provision for promotion of research and development and common testing laboratory, besides the construction of an exhibition hall for organising buyer-seller interaction. The Central Government has been eager to forward the funds under the scheme, Mr Rajarethinam said while delivering the valedictory address at the `Print-n-Pack 2000', a printing and packaging exhibition. He suggested the establishment of the permanent exhibition stall on an area of five to ten acres on the city's outskirts. Mr Rajarethinam expressed happiness over the export-quality equipment on display at the exhibition. With `LPG' (Liberalisation, Privatisation and Globalisation) determining the country's economic track on the one hand and the encouraging of private enterprises initiative on the other, it is no longer ideal for the people to look to the Government for employment, he stressed. He later honoured the best stall awardees. Three awards and a special award were given at the function. The President of Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANTSIA), Mr K.V. Kanagambaram, expressing apprehension over the reported contemplation of the Government to privatise SIDCO, said that industrialists' would protest such a move. On permanent exhibition venue, he opined that it could be expedited by forming a committee comprising representatives of MADITSSIA, TANTSIA and SIDCO. Presiding over the function, the President of MADITSSIA, Mr K. Ramachandran, urged the big industrial groups in the South such as Spic, TVS and Ramco to procure materials from the small industries and come up with their contribution to reduce the burden of the Government in establishing a permanent exhibition venue. The Chairman of the exhibition, Mr Rm.Lakshminarayanan, said there were 45,000 visitors to the exhibition.
