"This is being done to gain complete declaration from the cable operator community on subscriber numbers."

MUMBAI, Dec. 9

STAR India Pvt Ltd on Monday informed that it has taken a decision to drop its cable subscription rate by 25 per cent.

Accordingly, the monthly subscription rate for Star Network will decrease from Rs 40 to Rs 30, effective January 1, 2003, an official statement said.

"This is being done to gain complete transparency and declaration from the cable operator community, on subscriber numbers," it said. Star Network comprises eight channels - Star Plus, Star Gold, Star World, Star Movies, Star News, Channel V, National Geographic Channel and Adventure 1.

"By reducing our price we believe that cable operators and ourselves can work closer together for the long-term benefit of the households that view our channels every day," Mr Peter Mukerjea, CEO, Star India, has said. However, Star's move which contrasts the general trend of rate increase in the industry is being taken with a pinch of salt by competition. A senior official at Zee-Turner claimed, word at cable operator level was that the indicated reduction in subcriber rate is subject to a full declaration of connections.

The official spokesperson for Star did not deny this and said the purpose of the exercise was to get higher transparency.
