India, UAE hold talks on action against Anees

Vimala Vasan

ABU DHABI, Dec. 9

INDIAN investigating authorities are working with their UAE counterparts to adopt the required strategy for further action against Anees Ibrahim, younger brother of the Mumbai underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim, who was arrested in Dubai last week, the Indian Ambassador, Mr K.C. Singh, said on Monday.

Reacting to reports about the arrest of Anees, Mr Singh said that confirmation was received from the police authorities in Dubai on December 5 that Anees Ibrahim had been arrested and was in their custody.

``His arrest is pursuant to the Red Corner notice issued by the Interpol in 1993, soon after the Mumbai bomb blasts. We are very thankful for the positive cooperation we have received from the Dubai and UAE authorities in this connection,'' he told newspersons here.

A CBI officer is currently stationed in Dubai to provide detailed documentation on Anees, who is wanted in many criminal cases in India, the envoy said.

When queried as to what efforts will be made to deport or extradite Anees, Mr Singh said: ``we will adopt the required strategy to get results. He is a fugitive and we want him,'' he said.

He indicated that measures covered under the mechanism of the extradition treaty between the UAE and India, as well as outside means based on the close cooperation between the two countries, which are ``mutually convenient'' would be adopted.

``We are hopeful of being successful but it may take a while,'' he said. Anees is the third major criminal wanted by India to be nabbed in the UAE this year.

Mr Singh stressed that the strong cooperation received from the Dubai and the UAE authorities had led to the arrests and subsequent deportation in January this year of Aftab Ansari and his accomplice Rajinder Kumar, wanted in connection with the Kolkata blasts, and Muthappa Rai, sought by the Karnataka Government, in May.

The arrest of Anees Ibrahim is against the background of this cooperation in the recent past, he said.
