Beef exports stay banned

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Dec. 7

BEEF exports from the country are banned. The Commerce Department on Saturday reiterated this "factual position" in response to questions being raised on the admissibility of beef exports.

In a statement, the Department said the prohibition is listed as item 0201 in the ITC (HS) classification of Export and Import items of the Exim Policy 2002-07.

All consignments of meat are subject to pre-shipment inspection. The State's Directorate of Animal Husbandry, the Export Inspection Council of the Ministry of Commerce or the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, Ministry of Agriculture, conducts this inspection.

"The consignment is bound to be seized if an exporter attempts to export beef. If an exporter attempts to export beef by fraudulently labelling it as some other meat, the consignment is bound to be seized and the exporter himself is liable to imprisonment," the Department statement said.
