The Hindu Business Line : AP Govt to evolve health tourism package

THE Andhra Pradesh Government is working towards developing an attractive tourism package that leverages the potential of Hyderabad of being a major healthcare destination with several corporate hospitals located in the city.

Consequent on a meeting convened by the State Minister for Medical and Health and Family Welfare, Dr K. Siva Prasada Rao, which focussed on leveraging the potential of healthcare sector in the State, a committee was formed with Dr Anji Reddy, Director-General, Health Services, as its chairman.

This committee has been mandated to explore and suggest ways to further develop transportation and treatment facilities with a focus on supporting tourism-related activities. This would entail simplification of procedures for persons who visit India/Hyderabad on health tourism package particularly with several airliners providing direct connectivity to West Asia and the Far East countries.

The Government has proposed to establish a committee that will have representatives from the corporate world, hospitality, tourism department and healthcare. This committee will be empowered to suggest modalities for clearing the complications that arise out of the legislation on transplantation of organs.

In this endeavour, the Government also plans to hold talk with the United Arab Emirates and request them to help establish a facility there that helps exhibit different packages and the potential of tourism.

The meeting concluded that the current scenario was such that a lot of health tourists from West Asia frequent western countries. With Hyderabad well connected to West Asia with direct flights it is opportune time to tap the potential by creating the necessary support infrastructure.
