Telecommunications BSNL to set up mobile PCOs in rural areas Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Dec. 3 IN an effort to bring telecom facilities at the doorstep of the people in the rural areas, the Department of Post has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, to set up mobile PCOs in rural areas. Speaking to newspersons, the BSNL Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Prithipal Singh, said, "a pilot scheme would be launched on December 25 for providing mobile PCO service in villages. The pilot scheme is likely to launched by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee." This would set the stage for the 2,000 grameen sanchar sewaks (GSS) to take the telecom facility to over 7,000 villages during their routine beats. The GSS would be carrying integrated fixed wireless terminals (FWT) with display unit facilities, to offer door-to-door telecom facility to the villagers, Mr Singh said, adding that the terminals would be supplied by BSNL. The pilot scheme as well as the tariff has been designed on the basis of the existing PCO franchisee scheme of BSNL.
