NEW DELHI, Nov. 27

THE UK-based City & Guilds, a vocational awarding body, on Wednesday announced the formal launch of its operations in India. City & Guilds offers 500 qualifications across 22 sectors, ranging from basic skills to the equivalent of a post-graduate degree, a press release stated.

According to a company release, in India, City & Guilds plans to set up 500 centres over the next five years in smaller cities. These would be in addition to an existing main office in Delhi and representative offices in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

City & Guilds will partner industry in both manufacturing and the service sector in setting up training institutes, the release adds. Mr Michael Swan, CEO, City & Guilds, said, "The value placed on vocational training is misunderstood with far too much emphasis placed on academic qualifications. The focus must also be on work-based learning, with economic benefits."
