KOCHI, Nov. 27

AS many as five consortiums have submitted application for participation in the final tenders of the International Container Transhipment Terminal proposed by the Cochin Port Trust at Vallarpadam as the deadline for the pre-qualification tender for the project ended today.

The companies included CSX World Terminals, Larsen & Toubro, Chennai, Nippon Yusen, Japan, Maersk India Pvt Ltd and PSA, Singapore. As many as 14 firms have evinced interest in the project and nine had participated in the pre-bid meet held on November 6. Of this, five had submitted applications for qualification for the project, port officials said.

Larsen & Toubro is the lone company that has responded to the tender floated by the port while P&O India, which was the lone bidder earlier, did not respond this time. Maersk India has joined hands with APM Terminal, Denmark, to vie for the contract.

The port would scrutinise the tender application in a week's time and the companies would be asked to submit the request for final proposal by December 15. The companies would be given time till January end to submit the final proposal. The deadline for submission of tenders was earlier fixed for November 15, but was extended till November 26 on the request of bidders.

The port was aiming to complete the bidding process by March 1, 2003. The firm order to prospective terminal operators would be given by March 1. The project is being established on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis, port officials said.
