KOCHI, Nov. 27

A NATIONAL seminar on sire selection for milk production enhancement in tropics has highlighted the need to augment the genetic potential of the crossbred stock, optimising stock to carrying capacity, increasing the proportion of the existing crossbred stock in the cattle population and improving the reproduction management of the stock.

The three-day seminar held at the Kerala Livestock Development Board farm (KLDB) at Mattupatti in the Idukki district emphasised the need for providing conveyance facility and giving incentives to the artificial insemination technicians in the mobile AI centres.

Experts at the meeting called for national standards for quality certification of frozen semen since several agencies are involved in this field. Also, possibilities of incorporating rotational cross breeding for getting the better aspects of various breeds need to be studied, they said.
