No takers for shrimps

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, Nov. 26

THE market for black tiger shrimps is going through a low both in terms of prices and activity with arrivals from farms down and no takers for the produce.

Black tiger prices range around $12.40 per kg 16-20 counts as compared to $12.60 last week but the Japanese buyers are staying away and the US, which was offering $5.70 per pound two days back is not making any purchases. Therefore, if there are any purchases during the week it could be at slightly lower levels, according to market sources.

Output from the shrimp farms in Nellore and Beemavaram in Andhra Pradesh are just a fraction of the levels normal for the season. Prices range around Rs 390 per kg 30 counts on head - on basis. At the prevailing export prices, the processors could lose up to one dollar per kg if they picked up stocks at these levels. Further, the processors are not showing much interest because of the low offtake by importers.
