Coir Coir Board moots development policy G.K. Nair
KOCHI, Nov. 20 THE Coir Board has proposed a national coir development policy for a sustained growth of the sector. Mr Christy Fernandez, Chairman, Coir Board, told Business Line that a proposal had been sent to the Union Agro and Rural Industries (ARI) Ministry recently and a positive response was awaited. The board meeting held in New Delhi on October 5 had considered a draft policy for recommendation to the Central Government, he said. The industry is now conscious of the need for a market-oriented development for a sustained growth in the coming years. A concerted effort is now going on in the industry for strengthening research and development activities, for product diversification and to achieve a market-led production. With a view to providing duly-qualified and skilled higher and middle level management personnel, an industry-university tie-up has already been established. ``Realising the fact that information is the key to success, efforts are being built up in the industry for strengthening its database ,'' he said. A raw material bank has been formulated and promoted by the Coir Board and the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI), Ahmedabad with financial assistance from SIDBI and SBI for the benefit of the industry, he said. As part of its programme to promote coir industry in other parts of the country where coconut is grown, the board has given special emphasis to the development of coir industry in Tripura and Jharkhand, Mr Fernandez said. It has already initiated various measures for development of coir industry in the North-eastern States. With a view of imparting training to women workers in the region in spinning of coir yarn on motorised ratts, the board has established a field-training unit with the active cooperation of the State Government of Tripura, he said.
