Infrastructure Logistics - Roadways Jayalalithaa inaugurates new bus terminus in Chennai Our Bureau
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, inaugurating the Chennai Metropolitan Bus terminus at Koyambedu in Chennai on Monday.
CHENNAI, Nov. 18 THE new Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus commenced operations today with three buses being flagged off by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa. Built at a cost of Rs 103 crore, the terminus has a capacity to handle over 2,000 buses and two lakh passengers per day. The existing State transport services, express bus services, private (omni bus) services and other State transport services which are operating out of the Parrys Corner terminus will now be shifted to the new facility located at Koyambedu, at the junction of the Inner Ring Road (100 ft road) and the Poonamallee High Road. Built by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, the new facility is expected to reduce the congestion in the Parry's Corner and Broadway areas, a commercial centre in the city. Spread over 36.5 acres, the terminus has space to simultaneously station over 270 buses, three hotels and three smaller eateries, an 18,000 sq ft waiting facility for passengers, 25,000 sq ft parking space for auto rickshaws, cabs and private cars, and 16,000 sq ft parking space for two-wheelers. Three locker rooms and 10 travel agency offices have also been provided, according to an official press release. It may be remembered that the facility was envisaged as a part of a comprehensive scheme to decongest north Chennai commercial area, the Parry's Corner. The project envisaged shifting out of the area the wholesale fruit and vegetable market, the textile merchants, iron and steel merchants, and the bus terminus. The city administration had earlier shifted the wholesale fruit and vegetable market to the market constructed at Koyambedu and the iron merchants to Sathangadu, a northern suburb. The facility for the wholesale textile merchants at Koyambedu is yet to commence operations.
