Agriculture Single certifying agency for organic products urged Our Bureau
MANGALORE, Nov. 15 THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has asked the Union Ministry of Commerce to ensure that the entire national programme of organic products be channelled through a single agency. In a letter to the Additional Secretary to the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, KCCI has said that a single accreditation certifying agency would help streamline the entire programme. Moreover, development and implementing agencies like APEDA and the Spices Board should focus on promoting organic production rather than function as accrediting bodies. In fact, prior to the implementation of the national programme of organic products, organic production in India had been certified under EEC 2092 by recognised accredited inspecting agencies from the European Union. However, once the programme was implemented, all the agencies acting on behalf of international agencies have been asked to get accredited under the Indian programme. This, according to KCCI, had resulted in a strange situation wherein each separate agency was insisting on accreditation being done at its level.
