HAL advances Sukhoi deadline

BANGALORE, Nov. 12

HINDUSTAN Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has compressed the production schedule of Sukhoi-30 fighters by four years.

The full complement of the contracted140 Su-30 MKI aircraft will be delivered to the Indian Air Force by 2013-14, or in 10 years, instead of the earlier plan of 14 years, according to the HAL Chairman, Mr N.R. Mohanty.

The schedule had been shortened as IAF wanted them earlier, he told newspersons after he received a commendation from the Chief of Air Staff for HAL's Overhaul Division, which maintains IAF's Kiran fleet.

HAL and IAF signed the Rs 20,000-crore Su-30 deal in 2000.

Mr Mohanty said the first indigenously made Su-30 fighter plane would be delivered in 2004.

It has also decided to outsource "low and medium type components in a big way" while retaining the manufacture of critical ones.

The project can be financed out of internal resources even though the company, with a high credit rating, should have no problem raising funds.

HAL was also working at delivering the intermediate jet trainer (IJT) in record time by 2007-08, while the aircraft was expected to do its maiden flight in February-March next year, Mr Mohanty said.

The IJTs will be replacing the 200-plus Kiran fleet in phases, according to the Air Officer Commanding-in-chief, Training Command, Air Marshal T.J. Master, who handed over the commendation of the Overhaul Division — the first such from the IAF.

Air Marshal Master said a proposal had been now made to the Defence Ministry to indigenise the maintenance of the rest of the fleet.

The next step after the IJT, he said, would be to become independent in total training requirements during this decade.
