THE Union Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Ananth Kumar, has appealed to the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, to convene an all-party meeting to impress upon the political parties on the need to empower urban local bodies as per the recommendations of the 74th Constitutional Amendment

Mr Kumar, who was addressing a conference of Mayors from various parts of the country in the Capital on Tuesday, also emphasised on the need for the National Development Council to deliberate on the issue and arrive at a consensus on empowering urban local bodies with adequate administrative and financial powers.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, Mr Vijay Goel, advised all the political parties in city corporations to arrive at a consensus on the need to empower these bodies as per the provisions of 74th Constitutional Amendment and pass a unanimous resolution to that effect.
