Plantations Kerala move to solve plantation crisis Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Nov. 6 A MEETING of the Cabinet of the Council of Ministers in Kerala has decided to depute the State Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran, and the Finance Minister, Mr K. Sankaranarayanan, for liasing with the concerned parties to find a settlement to the crisis simmering in the State's plantation sector. Announcing this to newspersons after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, said the Ministers will hold a series of meetings with plantation owners, representatives of unions and other concerned people and would seek to thrash out mutual differences on framing a common approach to settling the issues. When reminded of the fact that not every plantation owner has been cooperative with similar Government initiatives in the recent past, the Chief Minister said that there were `other ways' for trying and persuading them to see reason. Mr Antony, however, clarified that the State Government was not planning to take over the plantations, many of which have either been abandoned or closed down. The Chief Minister further informed that Mr Babu Divakaran would lead a delegation to New Delhi to pressurise the Centre to initiating immediate steps for finding a solution to the problems being faced by the plantation workers in the State. Nod for BSNL cable-laying: The Cabinet meeting gave approval to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) for laying optical fibre cable along public thoroughfares in the State. The Chief Minister said the Public Works Department is under strict instructions to strictly implement the rules and regulations applicable to cable laying work along public roads. Those companies which intend to lay the cable would have to take prior permission from the PWD and should also be able to complete the work within the time-frame committed by each, Mr Antony said.
