Roadways CNG: A burning issue in Kerala
A writ petition seeking to direct the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to switch over to compressed natural gas (CNG) from diesel as fuel for its fleet, within a reasonable timeframe, has been admitted by the Kerala High Court. It was submitted before the Court that KSRTC, which has more than 5,000 buses, does not undergo any regular pollution checks or carry any pollution-free certificate. Most buses emit carbon monoxide much above the prescribed limit and the police do not take action for obvious reasons. The petitioner, Mr Sathyavan Kottarakkara, Convenor of the Vidyabhasa Suraksha Samithi, points out that CNG is the most commonly used environmentally friendly fuel in vehicles. Natural gas is composed mostly of methane, which is relatively clean as it produces less carbon-dioxide. As a long-term measure, KSRTC buses should, therefore, be allowed to ply with CNG only. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules 115 prescribes the emission standards to be followed by the vehicles but KSRTC buses do not comply with them. Citing the recent Supreme Court order directing all the buses plying in Delhi to run only on CNG to curb vehicular pollution, he said a similar order was needed in Kerala.
