Textiles NTC bonus wrangle continues G. Gurumurthy
COIMBATORE, Nov.1 THE stalemate in the National Textile Corporation (NTC) employees' bonus wrangle in Tamil Nadu continues with both the NTC management and their workers affiliated to different trade unions sticking to their respective stands. The functioning of the textile units under the NTC fold in Tamil Nadu remained crippled by the indefinite strike by the workers, which entered the fifth day today. At least three rounds of conciliation initiated by the joint commissioner of labour, Coimbatore in the last three days failed to break the deadlock. The NTC workers are demanding payment of bonus to all the workers employed in the corporation owned units, whereas the NTC management has stuck to its decision to pay bonus only as per the Bonus Act. The offer from the NTC management to pay a recoverable cash advance of Rs 2,500 to those workers who are not eligible to bonus was rejected by the workers saying that they would not accept any settlement that would entail recovery of cash advance given in lieu of bonus. In the meantime, the NTC officials participating in a conciliation meeting convened by the JCL today are reported to have come out with an alternative proposal which envisaged splitting up of the cash advance into two part. While first part of the cash advance would have an indefinite time-limit for recovery, the second part of the cash advance would be recovered at an early specified period. This offer too was said to have been rejected by the workers. According to the trade union sources, the workers would be intensified from Saturday if the management failed to settle the issue. In the meantime, the workers of the two NTC units in Pondicherry too have joined in the indefinite strike from today.
