NTPC Kayamkulam capacity to go up

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Nov. 1

THE capacity of the Kayamkulam project of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) would be expanded by 1,950 MW, according to the Union Power Minister, Mr Anant G. Geete.

NTPC would set up its own LNG terminal to take care of the fuel requirement of the expanded generation facility, Mr Geete said. The project's present capacity is 350 MW. It may be recalled that Petronet LNG, which had proposed to set up an LNG terminal in Kochi, is going slow on the project in the wake of NTPC pulling out of the consortium. The project has now been rendered unviable as NTPC was to be the anchor customer for the offtake of gas from the terminal.

The Minister said Kerala could not avail itself of funds to the tune of Rs 60 crore from the Accelerated Power Development and Reform Programme as it could not carry out the reforms in the power sector as had been set out in the memorandum of understanding.
