Ornamental fish hatchery plan for Lakshadweep

LAKSHADWEEP Development Corporation Ltd (LDCL) is all set to diversify its activities in the fisheries sector by setting up an ornamental fish hatchery.

The hatchery will be a 100 per cent EOU with the assistance of ADAS APS of Denmark.The corporation is expected to have its first order executed by March 2003.

LDCL will also be setting up an export-oriented frozen skipjack tune export project by direct collection of exportable quality of skipjack tune from the fishing ground of Valiyapani, Cheriyapani and Perumalpar in Lakshadweep.

This scheme is expected to aid fishermen in selling heir catch and earning better revenue, specially forex, to the tune of Rs 1.75 crore, a release said.

The corporation is also in the process of setting up a coconut milk plant at Androth with the technical assistance of Coconut Development Board and Regional Research Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram.

LDCL has registered a profit of Rs 23.60 lakh for the year ending 2001-02.

According to the company, the turnaround is largely on account of its shipping division.

Fishing and shipping will continue to be the corporation's thrust areas in the years to come.

The ongoing projects are expected to yield higher revenues; the corporation expects to end the year with a cash profit of Rs 1.25 crore.
