BANGALORE, Oct 25

DESPITE the prevailing downturn in global technology and communications sector, organisers of BangaloreIT.com 2002, the technology event, on Friday said that they have got a better response to the event than last year.Delegates and IT firms from about 17 countries are participating in the event, Mr D.B. Inamdar, Minister of IT and Tourism, told newspersons.

The President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, will inaugurate the event and participate in a panel discussion on e-governance called `IT for the Common Man'.

The UK E-commerce Minister, Mr Stephen Timms, and the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka are the other dignitaries who will participate in the event, which will highlight the emerging sectors of Indian IT such as BPO, e-governance and banking and finance.

"We expect a better participation this year despite the dynamics in changing global scenario," Mr B.V. Naidu, Director, STPI, Bangalore, which is co-sponsor of the event, said.

About 250 companies are expected to participate in the event. Better participation this year from foreign countries and the Indian States, apart from IT companies, reflects the leading position Karnataka enjoys in IT sector, he added.

The event, which aims to facilitate business between technology companies, expects to surpass the business transactions of $250 million it recorded last year, Mr Inamdar said.

Mr Vivek Kulkarni, the State IT secretary, said that the event would provide a platform for the global ICT industry to launch its latest products, services and exchange information on pertinent market issues.BangaloreIT.com will also feature a conference for the banking and finance sector, the TiE Conclave and a conference on `Customer Centricity for Business Excellence'.The Students Internet World would be inaugurated by the President after which he will interact with 600 students on exploring Internet services.
